About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and Portuguese

Peixes do Brasil presents for the first time, in a bilingual edition, the complete set of marine and freshwater watercolours drawn by Jacques Burkhardt. It is the largest collection of Brazilian fish drawings by a single artist, of which only a small portion has been published so far. Burkhardt was part of the Thayer Expedition, conceived and led by the Swiss naturalist Louis Agassiz, with whom he toured the Brazilian territory in the years 1865 and 1866. The value of watercolours, made before the emergence of colour photography, is not limited to artistic aspects, recording important information such as dates and locations, as well as handwritten notes. Some of them, made by Agassiz, highlight his attention to the details of Burkhardt's drawing and reveal traces of the temperament of this controversial figure of nineteenth-century natural sciences.
