About this book

Language: Bilingual in English (in PDF format on CD-ROM) and Portuguese (the printed book)

The Natural History of the Desertas Islands represents the culmination of a project by the Cape Verdean Zoological Society entitled "Scientific Compilation (bulletin) on the Biological Diversity of the Desertas Islands – Santa Luzia, Branco and Raso in Cape Verde", funded by the Global Environmental Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) in 2011 and supported by the National Directorate for the Environment .

This bilingual publication – the printed Portuguese version is available together with a digital English version – is a tool of scientific rigour, bringing together information on various aspects that have already been published, and others chapters containing material yet to be published, on the natural history of this remote and scientifically underexplored area that is included in this biodiversity hotspot.

Edited by Raquel Vasconcelos (CIBIO-InBIO, University of Porto), Rui Freitas (DECM, University of Cape Verde) and J. Cornelis Hazevoet (IICT, Tropical Research Institute), The Natural History of the Desertas Islands contains 10 illustrated chapters with a vast amount of scientific information validated by 19 internationally recognized experts. The book aims to provide basic information which, in addition to raising public awareness of the loss of biodiversity in this region, can guide the management of species on, and marine and coastal habitats in the Nature Reserves of Santa Luzia, Branco and Raso islets and the Marine Protected Area. It is also intended to stimulate decision makers and users of the Desertas Islands to safeguard its biodiversity.

Proceeds of the sales will revert to fellowships that the SCVZ (Cape Verdean Zoological Society) will give to Cape Verdean and European students and researchers to study the Desertas Islands.

"[...] This book has been the combined effort of 19 internationally recognised experts. Apart from being a great distillation of facts, it is extremely well designed and illustrated. Proceeds of the sales will revert to fellowships that the Cape Verdean Zoological Society will give to students and researchers to study the Desertas Islands."
