Owls have always fascinated humans, especially because of their large eyes, their piercing gaze and the ability to wink with the upper eyelid. Their nocturnal occurrence and uncanny vocalizations often led to misconceptions. In many countries owls are still feared today and play a major role in superstition, even in traditional medicine.

The ability to fly silently, the camouflage markings on their plumage and the habit of spending the day in sheltered resting places in treetops, tree holes or holes in buildings make understanding them better a great challenge. At courtship time, during territorial demarcation and rearing of the juveniles, the various species attract attention through typical songs, cries and begging vocalizations. In the nocturnal hours these are often audible. Understanding and recognizing owl vocalisation is an important prerequisite for anyone who wants to engage more closely with these predators.

This MP3 CD-ROM with a playing time of four and a half hours, based on the latest literature, presents 19 species of owls (sometimes in several subspecies), which occur as breeding birds or regular visitors in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The typical vocals, various calls and also instrumental sounds, such as bill-clapping and wing-flapping, are presented.

The accompanying 32-page booklet contains details about the sound recordings, recording data and other interesting background information, as well as colour photos. An index of species names provides a targeted and quick access to the sound recordings. Every audio recording is immediately accessible as an MP3 file.

The final part of this work is a special section with four longer recordings (between five to seventeen minutes in length): This special part contains several, particularly long recording sequences that can be heard during the months of March, May and June, during the nocturnal courtship of the boreal owl and in the period of the flight of the long-eared owl. The conclusion is a scientifically interesting compilation of vocalizations of the short-eared owl, which was recorded during the research for a book publication.

Die Eulen haben schon immer eine starke Faszination auf Menschen ausgeübt, vor allem durch ihre großen Augen, den stechenden Blick und die Fähigkeit, mit dem oberen Augenlid zu zwinkern. Nächtliches Auftreten und auch unheimliche Lautäußerungen führten oft zu falschen Vorstellungen. In vielen Ländern werden Eulen noch heute gefürchtet und spielen eine große Rolle im Aberglauben, selbst  in der traditionellen Medizin.

Die Fähigkeit zum lautlosen Flug, die Tarnzeichnung des Gefieders und die Angewohnheit, den Tag an geschützten Ruheplätzen in Baumkronen, Baumhöhlen oder Nischen an Gebäuden zu verbringen, lassen ihre Erforschung zu einer großen Herausforderung werden. Zur Balzzeit, während der Revierabgrenzung und Aufzucht der Jungvögel machen die verschiedenen Arten durch typische Gesänge, Rufe und bettelnde Lautäußerungen auf sich aufmerksam. In den lärmberuhigten Nachtstunden sind diese oft weithin hörbar. Die Kenntnis der Lautäußerungen von Eulen ist eine wichtige Voraussetzung für jeden, der sich mit diesen Beutegreifern näher beschäftigen will.

Den Abschluss dieses Werkes bilden in einem Spezial-Teil vier längere Aufnahmen: In diesem spezial sind zuerst mehrere, besonders lange Aufnahmesequenzen aus den Monaten März, Mai und Juni zu hören, entstanden während der nächtlichen Balz des Raufußkauzes und im Zeitraum der ausfliegenden Waldohreulen. Den Schluss bildet ein aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht interessanter Zusammenschnitt von Lautäußerungen der Sumpfohreule, welcher in Vorbereitung für eine Buchveröffentlichung entstand.
