About this book

Language: German

The second part of this multi-volume study on the Trilobites of the Eifel covers two families of the Phacopida, quantitatively the most important trilobite order in the Eifel after the Proetida: the extremely rare family Cheiruridae and the quite common Acastidae. Of these Acastidae we know three subfamilies: Acastavinae, Asteropyginae and Acastinae, with the Asteropyginae clearly dominating. In the ranking of absolute importance for the entire Eifel-Devon, they come immediately after the Phacopinae and the Proetida. Therefore, they are the "standard" of any collection. Pronounced edge coverage on the armor makes the Asteropyginae the visually most impressive group in the Eifel, next to the Lichids and Odontopleurids. The remarkable biodiversity and the stratigraphic potential are of considerable importance. Circa 5000 specimens, mostly from "old" collections, are available. Thus, the Eifel-Acastidae can be presented on an unprecedented scale. Almost all holotypes and lectotypes, as well as numerous new taxa are discussed and illustrated. For a better understanding, large parts of Europe and Morocco are included. The results of this study are presented on 200 pages and 29 newly designed plates with 507 black and white photos. An appendix explains the spatial and temporal distribution of Eifel-Taxa; orientation aids come in the form of four stratigraphic tables as well as an illustrated glossary of trilobite terminology.
