About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and Japanese

The beautiful Emperor Butterflies (subfamily Apaturinae) are shown on 172 colour plates with 21 genera, 97 species (including over 30 type specimen images and four holotypes, six subspecies holotypes, two paratypes, six subspecies paratypes, one syntype, and one allotype). The text part consists mainly of a general overview and various explanations.

The general overview discusses morphological and biological characteristics, distribution, a brief history of the taxonomy, fossils of the Apaturinae, and other topics. Various explanations of the genera and species include original descriptions and subspecies, as well as images of the male genitalia and images of adults from other groups with similar characteristics (including Papilionidae, Pieridae, Danaidae, Geometridae, Zygaenidae, Arctiidae etc.), explaining the phenomenon of convergence. There are also images of collection surveys, habitat environments, and exchanges with overseas researchers.
