About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and Japanese with scientific nomenclature

This definitive encyclopaedia covers all 48 frog species occurring in Japan. Based on the latest genetic analyses, this book contains the latest phylogenetic trees. Compared to the authors' previous 1999 book, this book now also contains new, introduced, and exotic species that have been identified in the last two decades. The book contains detailed descriptions of morphology, life history, ecology (including a sonogram), and taxonomy (including a schematic illustration of the karyotype). Species that may change classification in future taxonomic studies, such as cryptic and unlisted species, are mentioned in the commentary.

All adults are photographed in the same pose, with photos showing the dorsal, ventral and lateral views for all species. Various photos of limbs are also included, allowing comparison with similar books. The large selection of photos furthermore shows individual colour variations. Finally, photos of juveniles, larvae (tadpoles) and eggs are included, showing them against a white background. For larvae, too, frontal, dorsal, ventral, and lateral views are included, as well as photos of egg masses and froglets just after metamorphosis.
