About this book

The Field Guide to the Woody Plants of the Northern Forest is a compact guide to the ecology, geography, and identification of the trees, shrubs, and woody vines of the northeastern United States and adjacent Canada. It covers 272 species, provides 80 quick guides and charts for rapid identification, and contains nearly 3,000 colour drawings and photos.

It is the first field guide in sixty-five years to cover the trees and shrubs of the Northern Forest Region; the first ever to include quick guides to habitats, buds, leaves, flowers, fruits, and families; and the first ever to use stacked photos and colored vector drawings throughout.

A companion digital atlas with 2,200 additional images is available as a free download on the Atlas website.

Media reviews

"I have only scratched the surface, but this book is even more spectacular than I could have ever imagined. Beyond a mere field guide, Jerry Jenkins's extraordinary illustrations and insights represent an entirely new genre in natural history literature."
– Charles D. Canham, forest ecologist and author of Forests Adrift

"This is one of the finest guides of its kind that I've seen. The identification sections for trees, shrubs, and vines are definitively detailed and illustrated. Covering an extensive geographical range and paired with exhaustive ecological information, there isn't need for another resource on the topic."
– Donald J. Leopold, SUNY ESF
