About this book

Language: Italian

Widespread in the gardens, rooted in our memory and so integrated into the landscape that familiarity with their presence leads us to consider them spontaneous: hortensias and hydrangeas. Cared for in the gardens and parks of old villas or forgotten around the farms, with their soft colours, they are witnesses of ancient traditions. The dazzling colours of the new selections amaze us with their liveliness and endurance, affirming the genetic potential of these shrubs and the abilities of hybridizers.

Although believed to be Italian, hortensias and hydrangeas are alien species that landed on the continent only a little over two centuries ago.

From the collaboration between a naturalist, an expert hydrangea collector, and a photographer specialized in the portrait of greenery, this book accurately describes and illustrates more than 600 hortensias and hydrangeas, down to the level of species, varieties and cultivars. Comparing the works of the most famous scholars from the beginning of the eighteenth century to today, the book frames the genus Hydrangea from a historical point of view and aims to bring order to the complex and controversial classification. Complete with over 1000 synonyms, a glossary and a bibliography. The new edition has been enriched with other varieties, curiosities and cultivation tips to get the best results from these colourful bushes.
