About this book

Language: English

From the preface:

"Presently, forest resources and tree based economy is flourishing at a rapid scale and there is new interest in raising profitable trees species on available lands in the country. The growing demands for wood and food, besides several other tangible and intangible benefits bestowed by forests, has steered forestry to the fore front. In countries like India, where forest resources are shrinking at an alarming rate, the people and industries have been forced to look for their forest based raw materials from man-made plantations and farmlands. Tree farming, therefore, has become an enterprise as trees have become a panacea to provide economic solutions for rural areas besides ensuring ecological support. Tree planting along the bounds, in unproductive or fallow lands, and as an agroforestry crop, are promising avenues to meet the huge demand and supply of raw materials for large scale industries such as paper, pulpwood, plywood, matchwood and other wood-based manufacturing units such as pencils, packing cases, furniture, handicrafts etc.

In this scenario, forestry research organizations like the lndian Council of Forestry Research and lliducation (lCFRE) and institutes under its fold like Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding and State Forest Departments have been extending their services to stakeholders through lab to land transfer of technology and programs like Tree Cultivation in Private lands with emphasis on cultivation of economically important fast growing tree species. As an attempt to support mainly the programs of trees outside the forests (TOF), this book is an attempt to compile information about most of these economically important preferred forestry species. The editors have meticulously gathered and compiled this book, which provides details about important aspects like taxonomy, distribution, utility, reproductive biology, genetics, silviculture, pests and diseases, and shared research experiences for important forestry plantation species in South India that hopefully would serve as a ready reference to forestry researchers, managers and many other stakeholders."
