About this book

Language: French

Freshwater bivalves are not very charismatic animals, often difficult to observe and poorly known to naturalists. Yet, they can tell us extraordinary natural stories. Some species live up to 280 years and have as such experience two centuries of history of the rivers of France. The reproductive cycle of Naiads (family Unionidae), with the intervention of a fish host, makes them very mobile animals during the early stages of their life. On the other hand, the Cyclades are viviparous (giving birth to live young) and the adults protect the juveniles in the shelter of their valves during their first phase of growth. Shells and pearls have been much written about and there are many historical testimonials about them.

While they can account for more than 90% of the benthic biomass in preserved ecosystems, the Naiads have decreased dramatically during the twentieth century and it is difficult to imagine what the rivers of France were like when hundreds of thousands of bivalves were continuously filtering their waters.

This guide offers a panorama of France's freshwater bivalve species, with a general presentation and monographs for each species. The authors hope it will make users and managers of French rivers aware of the need for protection of these freswhater sentinels in France.
