The genus Tarenna was revised for continental Africa following classical herbarium taxonomy. Morphology, habitat and chorology of the genus in the study area are documented. A total of 54 taxa are recognized, from which five species, one subspecies and three varieties are new for science. Six regional keys are proposed. All continental African taxa are extensively described, synonyms are given and some taxa are illustrated by original drawings or figures from the literature. Distribution maps, authenticated by a full citation of all specimens seen, are supplied for each taxon. The systematic part also includes a list of doubtful and excluded species.
