About this book

Language: English

Lush green forests and rolling hills epitomize the natural beauty of the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Western India. Situated in the foothills of the Sahyadri mountain range, the Union Territory is blessed with a rich repository of natural wealth. About 40% of the area is under natural forests which are classified as 3B-C2 Southern Tropical Moist (Mixed) Deciduous as per Champion & Seth classification.

The major tree species are teak, khair, mahua, sadad, biyo, shisharn and haidu. Undisturbed forest areas in the northern part of the Union Territory, Umerqui, Bonta, Luhari and the Central areas especially near Satmalla and the Damanganga Reservoir are home to species like leopard, jungle cat, jackal, wild boar, mongoose, hare, hyena, etc. Endangered reptiles like the saw-scaled viper, Russell's viper, common cobra, python etc. are commonly found here. These forest tracts and adjoining water bodies are also home to a great variety of birds. The Wildlife Division, Forest Department has a mission to preserve and manage the natural wealth of Dadra & Nagar Haveli for sustainable and fruitful co-existence of wildlife and humans, and has undertaken several programmes on bio-diversity conservation and eco-tourism.

This field guide to the birds of Dadra and Nagar Haveli is the first such publication of the Wildlife Division, Forest Department of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The volume is primarily designed as a companion for birdwatchers and adventure tourists.
