Sherman traps are an environmentally friendly way to research small mammal populations and can be used for mammal collection, teaching and environmental impact studies. Sherman folding traps have the advantage of folding down to a size and shape which is easy to transport. The trap works by use of a trigger platform which causes the door to shut when the animal runs into the trap. This trap is made from galvanised aluminium which helps to prevent rusting.

This is a ‘live catch’ trap and so it should be checked regularly. Where appropriate traps should be provided with water and food.

The Small Folding Trap is suitable for trapping small mammals such as shrews and mice. The Sherman Trap is available in a range of sizes to suit your specific needs.

Robust and effective but with some problems

This trap works well with few false positives or "bait robbery" but is not without snags. It is hard to clean and needs washing under a strong water flow. It has to be used with hard bait e.g. bird food pellets. Any debris under the release plate will prevent operation. The mechanism has to be lubricated from time to time. WD40 spray is effective and does not seem to put off targets.
The trap has sharp edges and can trap long-tailed targets, even cutting off the tail. This can be overcome by slightly packing out the entry door at the top to stop full closure. Releasing a trapped target can be tricky. A short tube which just fits in the trap allows the door to be held open and the target released. Targets (e.g field mice) seem to be in a very good state when released.
