South America is poor in indigenous ungulates. In addition to tapirs, New World camels and peccaries, there are only a few representatives of the deer family. Unfortunately, little research has been done on their biology. In addition to the preferred occupation of the zoologists with animal groups restricted to the Neotropical region (e.g. anteaters and New World monkeys), the hidden way of life and the sometimes difficult to access habitats contribute to this. Because of the difficulties in obtaining and keeping them, South American deer are rarely seen in European zoos. Much is still unclear both on the biology and the systematics of the two genera treated here. The aim of this volume is to introduce the two genera Pudu and Mazama to a larger audience. The widely scattered literature has been evaluated in order to provide the most comprehensive possible picture of our current knowledge of the biology of pudus and brocket deer. The information on anatomy and keeping in zoos is deliberately kept short. The author is aware of the fact that the solution of many questions must be left to future research.
