The Succulent Liliaceae League was formed in 1946 by a small number of members who participated in a Haworthia Robin operated under the auspices of the American Cactus and Succulent Society. Their aim was to publish the Haworthia Review with more serious information, mainly for the genus Haworthia, but also for related genera. At that time there were no published books on haworthias and many of the published articles and descriptions were in foreign languages such as Latin, German and Portuguese. The league expired not much later in 1948.
Although the Haworthia Review had a short life, it served a useful purpose at that time, because it assembled in one publication, with English translations where necessary, much of the fragmented literature on haworthias. Whatever you may think of the League and the Review, one thing is certain; they were an important landmark in the development of interest in haworthias and related genera, consequently they are of interest today. They are still talked about in Haworthia circles and second hand copies of the Review sell for high prices when they are available, which is not very often.
The reprint of the Haworthia Review forms the bulk of this publication. In addition there are copies of a few other documents apparently prepared for the Review but with either no, or limited, distribution. This reprint is identical to the original except that obvious spelling/typing errors have been corrected and American English has become English. The page layout and numbering is the result of modem computer technology. A plant index, absent from the original, has been provided for this reprint.
