The book is the result of monographic studies on the fomier USSR flora of one of the largest and most widespread genera of flowering plants – Carex L. (Cyperaccae). The genus is represented in the territory considered by 382 species and subspecies. The present work contains a new system of the genus, descriptions of subgenera, sections and subsections, keys to sections, species and subspecies, the main synonyms, references to types, data on chromosome numbers and information on the ecology and geographical distribution of sedges. It also contains data on morphological, anatomical, karyological and some other features of Carex. In the work the relationships between various taxa of sedges are discussed as well as the trends in the evolution of this genus.
