He is a Vice President of the Bat Conservation Trust, and has been on the committees and councils of numerous national, local and international wildlife bodies. John lives in Suffolk.

He is Photographic Consultant for Birdwatch magazine and his photographs have been published in numerous magazines and books, including The Photographic Handbook of Rare Birds of Britain and Europe and The Photographic Handbook of the Wildfowl of the World, both published by New Holland.
