About this book

This second volume on Orchids ends the review of this family for continental tropical Africa which includes 1340 species divided into 87 genera (107 species are known only from the nomenclatural type). Genera with a large number of species are few; the authors mention Habenaria (231), Polystachia (192), Eulophia (116), Bulbophyllum (87), Disa (52), and Angraecum (50). There are 10 medium-sized genera, 17 relatively small genera, and 54 small genera, or about 62% of all genera. Continental tropical Africa is poor in orchids compared to other continents and their flowers are less spectacular.
