Kingfishers (Alcedo atthis) are beautiful birds that are found throughout the UK, particularly in South and central regions. Found almost exclusively in areas of slow moving or still waters, kingfishers are very vulnerable to pollution and habitat degradation caused by poor management of watercourses. They are an Amber Listed species in the UK.
The Kingfisher Tunnel is made from WoodStone, a mix of cement and FSC wood fibres that is very resistant to rot, provides a thermally stable internal environment and increased protection from predators.
The Kingfisher Tunnel should be placed in a vertical bank beside a slow moving river or lake. It should be completely buried so that only the entrance is visible and you should ensure that the entrance is at least one metre above the maximum water level. The tunnel should slope downwards from the nestbox at an angle of 10° to 20° to ensure adequate drainage.
Before use, put a layer of soil in the nest chamber and make a small cup shape to help keep the eggs together. If there are no nearby nesting perches in the water, placing an artifical one within a few metres of the nest will provide the kingfisher with a place to fish and look for predators. Placing two boxes near to each other (at least two metres apart) will allow the female to make a second nest whilst the male cares for the first brood.
