About this book

Language: Dutch

This is the first guide specifically for field ornithologists devoted to moulting – the periodic renewal of feathers – and its usefulness to identify birds in nature.

First, the book describes the different types of feathers, their formation, their role and the way they are arranged to constitute the plumage of birds, by specifying the nomenclature associated with it. The phenomenon of moulting is then explained in a didactic and illustrated manner, and answers are given to the major questions commonly asked by birdwatchers. What is the change for? What is a partial moult? A complete moult? A suspended moult? How does moult take place? Which feathers are affected and in what order are they renewed? According to which calendar? Finally, and for the first time, this guide presents the reader with concrete examples of cases where we have a good knowledge of the moulting strategies, to help with recognizing the different plumages of a species, to evaluate the age of the observed individuals, and even, in some cases, differentiate closely related species.

- The first guide of its kind, intended for field ornithologists
- More than 260 photos and about thirty illustrations
- 31 moulting charts presented in an innovative way

- 31 diagrammen over ruipatronen per soortgroep
