Die Biblische Pflanzenwelt brings to the German speaking audience an updated version of Dr. agro. Hans Arne Jensen’s Danish book Bibelens Planteverden (Rhodos 2004) and the English edition Plant World of the Bible (AuthorHouse, USA 2012).

The book is illustrated with 20 whole page colour plates from the unique and rarely printed Vienna Dioscorides, based on illustrations from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD, and 117 black and white illustrations of plants, coins, and other plant decorations, of which several are from biblical times. The illustrations are unique and add substantially to our understanding of the use and appreciation of plants in the biblical time.

Die Biblische Pflanzenwelt provides information on all verses in the Bible with plant or plant products mentioned. Being a comprehensive concordance, it deviates from most other books on the subject. The articles are arranged alphabetically according to the German biblical plant name. Each entry gives also the current German and the botanical (Latin) plant names. The text includes the four main Bible translations used in German speaking areas: 1. Luther’s Bible translation, revised edition 1984. 2. „Gute Nachricht“ Bible, revised edition 1997. 3. Elberfelder Bible, revised edition 1992. 4. Einheitsübersetzung 1997.

With reference to the Hebrew plant names in the Old Testament and the Greek in the New Testament, it is discussed for each Bible plant how certain we know which plant species the text is dealing with. In several cases the plant identification is supported by plant names used in Arab or similar languages. For each plant a botanical description is given, and, where relevant, the cultivation and use of the plant in ancient times. New are the thorough references to archaeological dated finds of biblical plants in Israel and surrounding countries. On this point, the book is substantially more informative than other previous books on the subject. The book has carefully been annotated by in total 168 literature references and approximately 760 index words. This detailed information furthers the use of the Die Biblische Planzenwelt among people with multiple fields of interests.

The book will appeal to laymen and pastors in both the protestant and catholic churches as well as to all those interested in biblical gardens. Due to its wide scope on Mediterranean and European cultural history it is also useful for those interested in botany, archaeology, history and botanical illustrations.

Die Biblische Pflanzenwelt bietet für das deutschsprachige Publikum eine aktualisierte Version von Dr. agro. Hans Arne Jensens dänischem Buch Bibelens Planteverden (Rhodos 2004) und der englischen Ausgabe Plant World of the Bible" (AuthorHouse, USA 2012).

Das Buch enthält 20 ganzseitige Farbtafeln aus dem einzigartigen und selten gedruckten Wiener Dioskurides, die nach Vorlagen des 1. Jh. v. Chr. bis 3. Jh. n. Chr. entstanden sind. Außerdem ist es illustriert mit 117 Schwarz-Weiß-Abbildungen von Pflanzen, Münzen und anderen Pflanzendekoren, etliche davon aus biblischer Zeit. Die Illustrationen sind einzigartig und tragen wesentlich zu unserem Verständnis von der Nutzung und Wertschätzung von Pflanzen in biblischer Zeit bei.

Die Biblische Pflanzenwelt gibt Auskunft über alle Verse in der Bibel, in denen Pflanzen oder Pflanzenerzeugnisse erwähnt werden. Als umfassende Konkordanz hebt sich das Werk damit von den meisten anderen Büchern zu diesem Thema ab. Die einzelnen Artikel sind alphabetisch nach den deutschen biblischen Pflanzennamen geordnet. Jeder Eintrag bietet außerdem sowohl den heutigen deutschen als auch den botanischen (lateinischen) Pflanzennamen. Der Text berücksichtigt die vier wichtigsten Bibelübersetzungen im deutschsprachigen Raum: 1. Luthers Bibelübersetzung, überarbeitete Auflage 1984; 2. die „Gute Nachricht“-Bibel, überarbeitete Auflage 1997; 3. die Elberfelder Bibel, überarbeitete Auflage 1992; 4. die Einheitsübersetzung von 1997.

In Bezug auf die hebräischen Pflanzennamen im Alten Testament und die griechischen im Neuen Testament wird für jede Bibelpflanze diskutiert, wie sicher wir wissen, um welche Pflanzenart es im Text geht. In mehreren Fällen wird die Identifizierung durch Pflanzennamen in arabischen oder anderen Sprachen unterstützt. Für jede Pflanze wird eine botanische Beschreibung gegeben und gegebenenfalls ihr Anbau und ihre Nutzung in alter Zeit erläutert. Neu sind die umfassenden Verweise auf datierte archäologische Funde biblischer Pflanzen in Israel und den umliegenden Ländern. In diesem Punkt ist das Buch wesentlich informativer als andere frühere Bücher zu diesem Thema. Das Buch wurde sorgfältig mit insgesamt 168 Literaturverweisen versehen und enthält etwa 760 Indexwörter. Diese detaillierten Informationen erleichtern die Nutzung der Biblischen Pflanzenwelt für Leser aus unterschiedlichen und vielfachen Interessengebieten.

Das Buch wendet sich an Laien und Geistliche der evangelischen und katholischen Kirchen sowie an alle, die sich für biblische Gärten interessieren.
