Monograph on the Midwife Toad, notable for the male's exercise of parental care. Die Geburtshelferkröte describes in detail reproduction, and deals with the individual development from egg to mature animal, introduces activity and communication, draws on population biology questions, responds to food and predation, and points to the importance of the new amphibian disease, chytridiomycosis. The relatively small Western European area of distribution is presented with special attention to the distribution in Germany. The claims to the land and habitat to aquatic larvae are described from a Central European perspective, without neglecting the side view of the evolution of the center of the midwife toad in the Iberian Peninsula. Especially on the northern and eastern site boundary is clearly the way back and is preparing to give up settlements. There is a lack of fish-free ponds, and extensive land uses are in decline and will be replaced by intensive forms or abandonment. Both can not tolerate the midwife toads in central Europe. Die Geburtshelferkröte includes a detailed chapter on the protection of nature, introduces protection programs and shows what needs to be done to stabilize the stocks. As a species in Annex IV of the Habitats Directive applies to them a strict species protection. The important for the midwife toad species protection provisions of German law are introduced and defined a set of abstract terms for this type.
