About this book

Language: German

When loud frog concerts sound from ponds, pools and lakes during balmy spring and summer nights, it is the mating time of water frogs. For many decades, the water frog was considered well researched, not least because it served generations of medical and biology students worldwide as a study object. But it was not until the middle of the last century that the secrets of the green frogs, well-known until then, were revealed, as water frogs are often called in the vernacular.

At the starting point of the great interest in the research of this group of animals was the discovery that the pond frog, widespread in Europe, is a hybrid, which goes back to crosses between small water frogs and marsh frogs. The real sensation, however, was the elucidation of the modes of heredity and reproduction of this hybrid form, which are unique within vertebrates and characterize the European aquatic frog complex as a special case in evolutionary biology.

In this monograph, the author, who has been working intensively on water frogs for about 20 years, summarizes the current state of knowledge in the fields of systematics and population genetics of the Western Palearctic Water Frog Complex. Of all the species and genetically differentiable forms that have become known up to now, the characteristic features, the distribution as well as ecology and behaviour are presented and new hypotheses about their relationships are discussed. Special attention was paid to the presentation of the mode of inheritance of hybridogenetic hybrid forms and the population genetics of the Central European water frogs of the so-called R. esculenta complex. Another thematic area deals with the endangerment and protection of water frogs, which are still among the stepchildren of conservationists. In many places unpublished data and observations flowed into the treatises. Through this, but also by the references to open or incompletely clarified questions, this monograph is of interest to a broad readership, from field herpetologists to conservationists and biology students to scientists, and encourages further research.
