About this book

Language: German

In this field-proof and fully waterproof identification guide all 20 amphibian species native to Germany, as well as three escaped species, are presented with their larvae in over more than 400 photos (versus almost 300 in the first edition), as well as distribution maps. The second, significantly expanded and improved edition also considers larvae, metamorphoses, juveniles and adults, and for the first time, spawn. This makes it possible in many cases to determine the native species at all stages of development. The book is aimed at people who have no or very little prior knowledge in the determination of species as well as advanced herpetologists. With its robust binding, it can also be trusted in the hands of children and adolescents.

The identification guide is kept as simple and clear as possible. The focus is on photos for the recognition of adult animals and their various stages of development, with many photos showing the amphibians in their natural habitats. An identification key has been omitted, and, above all, only those characteristics are listed that are also recognizable in the photos, often indicated by arrows.

In the new edition the authors have considered the wishes and suggestions of readers. The order of the species is largely organized according to a biological-systematic viewpoint. The photos of the metamorphic stages and juveniles have been greatly expanded and found in their section, as well as the eggs of newts and the spawn of frogs. In addition, numerous new photos have been added for the larvae, which also show younger stages and animals in top view.
