About this book

Language: German

It wasn't until the 1950s when, after extensive ethological research has been done on other vertebrates such as fish and birds, that research turned to the behaviour of the native frogs in Germany. In the mid-1960s, investigations into calls and call behaviour began, with Hans Schneider pioneering the use of modern methods, and his bioacoustic research providing new insights into mating behaviour, the structure of calls and their variability under the influence of temperature and animal size, as well as the systematics of frogs. His work, which has been ongoing for over 40 years, is presented here in a summary for the first time.

In addition to a text and image section, Bioakustik der Froschlurche includes an audio CD with the mating calls of the German frog species as well as of selected species from Europe and neighbouring areas that are related to these native species. In some species, the changes in the mating calls, depending on the temperature and the size of the animal, and other types of calls in addition to the mating calls, are also included.

The text and image part is divided into the sections call behaviour and calls. After a brief overview of the mating behaviour and its seasonal component, the most important calls are shown in detail using oscillograms and spectrograms. At the same time, the reader can listen to the audio samples noted in the text on the enclosed audio CD. A booklet with the audio CD lists the 83 audio samples of 25 species and thus also allows a separate use of the audio CD, e.g. outdoors.
