About this book

Language: German

The common European viper, Vipera berus, is the only venomous snake in Germany that is spread over large parts of the country. Until the middle of the last century it was mercilessly fought and persecuted, and premiums were paid for its killing – today it is a critically endangered species that requires special protection.

It has been almost 20 years since the first edition of this book on the viper was published. While there was already an enormous wealth of literature on the species at the time, the flow of publications has steadily increased in the meantime, and with it our detailed knowledge of the way this poisonous snake lives. In Germany, too, a number of field studies on the adder has been carried out over the past 20 years, as well as particularly valuable long-term studies. Two of the authors (Daniel Bohle and Norbert Otte) have been dealing with selected viper populations in Brandenburg for almost 20 years. Comparatively few of their studies and experiences have been published so far, so that this revision not only takes into account more than 150 new studies from the literature, but also includes many of their own original data.

The authors hope that with this new summary about the life of the adder, and their endangerment and protection, this will keep the interest in this species alive.
