About this book

Language: German

The Stock Dove, Columba oenas – the only European wild dove species nesting in tree cavities – is quite unstable in its population dynamics. While they declined in many areas, they spread to Western Europe and even settled on islands where they nest in burrows. The main concern of this book is to discuss the possible causes of the changes in populations and encourage further study of this phenomenon. Other priorities are issues of habitat selection and breeding biology. The basis for these subjects has been laid by investigations carried out over more than 10 years by the author on populations of the Dove in The Western Ore Mountains (German: Westerzgebirge), Saxony, and in Lower Lusatia (a region straddling the German and Polish border), but also by observations on aviary birds. In addition, demands on the breeding caves, interspecific competition and nutrition are discussed in detail and ringing results are evaluated. Notes on practical protection measures take a large space and illustrate the need to maintain suitable habitats of the Dove and to provide additional nesting opportunities. Through a combination of studies in the field and in the aviary, and by discussing the extensive literature, it is possible to give the reader an insight into the lifestyle of the Dove. Nevertheless, there a number of unresolved issues, which are referred to and which should stimulate further study of this interesting species
