About this book

Language: German

This books is designed to be able to determine, with relatively simple means, the pileate (i.e. having a pileus of cap) polypores of Central Europe. Numerous colour illustrations help the reader to identify tree fungi with tubular fruit layers living on woody substrae. Since the determination of species requires some experience, the detailed colour photos help even less experienced nature lovers on their way. In the first part, the reader is introduced to the morphology and anatomy of the polypores, before taking a closer look at the individual species in a second part. Interesting facts about the distribution, notes on use, or explanations of unusual names such as tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius, Zunderschwamm in German), agarikon (Laricifomes officinalis, Apothekerschwamm in German), Pflaumenbaumporling (a species growing on prune trees) or crab-of-the-woods (Laetiporus sulphureus, Schwefelporling in German) are interwoven in the species descriptions. Given its coverage of all European species, this guide will be helpful to practitioners, ecologists and conservationists working with polypores.
