About this book

Language: Portuguese

After centuries of deforestation, less than 10% of all ecosystems that constitute the Atlantic Forest remain today. The sharp reduction in area, together with its immense biological wealth and high levels of endemism, make the Atlantic Forest one of the world priorities for conservation. Moreover, these ecosystems are invaluable in providing ecological services such as water storage, erosion control and mineral cycling. For these reasons, the Atlantic Forest is a rich cutural, aesthetic, biological and economic heritage to Brazilians. However, despite being officially protected by the Constitution, the Atlantic Forest continues to be devastated, a victim of real estate speculation, illegal logging, poaching, pollution and agricultural activity.

This work provides an overview of the scientific information on the flora, fauna, ecology, conservation and regeneration of neotropical forests and the Atlantic Forest, bringing together case studies and an abundant bibliography. This information will help teachers and students in courses in Biological and Environmental Sciences, as well as people interested in ecology and conservation, to get to know some components of these ecosystems and their intricate ecological relationships.
