Since its inception in 1817, the scientific collections of the Faculty of Sciences of Leuven University, Belgium, have been the backbone of education and research in multiple disciplines. The genesis, expansion and cataloguing of the collections were closely connected to the scientific activities of the scholars involved. Visitors were proundly led around the natural history museums containing specimens from all around the world, the physics cabinets with scientific instruments, or the early laboratories for chemical research. The history of these collections mirrors the extensive changes that the faculty has undergone; not just wars and divisions, but also a thorough evolution in the practice of scientific research. Een Walvis in de Stad tells the story of the faculty from the unique perspective of her material heritage.
