About this book

Language: German with extensive summaries in English

The treasure that archaeologists have been saving for many years in the lignite mines of Neumark-Nord in the Geisel Valley, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, is around 200,000 years old. The site is one of the most important sources of information for Palaeolithic climate and natural history of Europe. In the ancient sediments they have found the relics of an entire lake habitat from when a heating phase during the Ice Age brought about an almost southern ecosystem. The extremely well-preserved remains of exotic animals and plant species illustrate the variety and strangeness of this bygone prehistoric world.

In the center of this dig are the remains of gigantic prehistoric Eurasian elephants who died in and around the lake. They are among the largest representatives of the Proboscidea that ever lived on Earth. Moreover, traces of the presence and behaviour of primitive man, betraying a developing intelligence, are detectable in this excellent hunting ground.
