This series, which was published from 1898 to 1946, was a large-format forerunner of the smaller format Annales du Musée Royal du Congo Belge Tervuren (Belgique): Serie in-8° - Sciences Zoologiques / Annalen van het Koninklijk Museum van Belgisch-Congo Tervuren (België): Reeks in-8° - Zoologische Wetenschappen which then changed name to Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, Tervuren, Belgique: Annales - Serie in 8° - Sciences Zoologiques / Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika, Tervuren, België: Annalen - Reeks in-8° - Zoologische Wetenschappen.

We have created a separate series record for this large-format series as the numbering of it is completely different from the smaller format continuation. This large-format series covered five subject areas, zoology being one of them. The other areas were A. Mineralogy, Geology and Palaeontology, B. Botany, D. Anthropology, and E. historical documents on the country and its inhabitants.

The zoology series describes all the fauna that was known in what was then the Belgian colony of Belgian Congo in Central Africa, and is divided in five series:
1. Fish, frogs, and reptiles
2. Mammals
3. Arthropods, crustaceans, arachnids and myriapoda
4. Birds
5. non-arthropod invertebrates including worms, molluscs, sponges and others.

As was not unusual at the time, publications within subseries were divided into parts covering certain groups, which, when very large, were published over several years in multiple fascicles.

As was usual at the time, earlier volumes in this series were printed on large sheets of paper which were then folded twice and were not cut, leaving the pages unopened. This collection of unbound sheets was put in a thin cardboard folder, which is how we receive these books from the publisher and how you will receive them when buying them (please note that this is not a production defect). Back then it was common for institutes and libraries buying these pulications to cut and bind them themselves. Later parts were pre-bound as paperbacks.
