Located to the east of the Pearl River mouth, Daya Bay is one of the largest bays in Guangdong Province, with an area of 600 km2. It remains a clean bay with pure and fresh water until now. Fishes play an extremely significant role in the function of this ecosystem as they are important members in the system and the ultimate reproducers in waters. There are about 300 species of fishes in Daya Bay. In 1985-86, the Institute of Oceanology, CAS, mainly collected data on 189 species of fishes living in the middle and lower layers in their studies of Daya Bay environments, and on reproduction in waters and resource multiplication. This atlas is published in the form of plates, based on the above data.
The plates not only provide basic information, but also serve as a useful handbook for fishery producers and scientific workers, as well as a good reference for environmental scientists to make direct contrasting analyses, and for decision-makers to plan construction along the bays.
This atlas generalizes each species of fish as a unit in terms of its distribution, shape, length-weight relationship, fecundity, spawning period and other characteristics, including black-and-white line drawing. Furthmore, one colour photograph is included for each of the 147 species.
