About this book

This book is an updated and much enlarged edition of a checklist to the birds of Greenland issued in 1994 by the Museum Tusculanum Press. The main part of the book is an account describing the occurrence of all the bird species encountered in Greenland, in total 268 species. For the 58 regularly breeding species distribution maps are presented, based on the author's own observations and information given in all kinds of published bird accounts from Greenland, in total more than 13,000 records. The introductory chapters give a brief introduction to Greenland; history, politics, climate, geography, biology, etc. followed by a description of the ornithology in Greenland.

Since the previous list, Canada Goose, Lesser Black-backed Gull and Redwing have established breeding populations and Bohemian Waxwing seems to be doing the same. Several new species have moreover occurred as vagrants in Greenland, including for example, two alcid species from the Pacific (probably a sign of climate change), several species from North America and from Europe. The taxonomy is updated according to international practice, which means that several subspecies from the previous list now are treated as species. The text is illustrated with numerous photos of birds and bird habitats.
