About this book
Clematis are loved for the abundance and colour of their blooms but are not so well known for their versatility. Although they are typically and successfully used as climbers, they can be grown almost anywhere under most conditions. This essential guide introduces the genus in all its glory to the novice gardener and extends the knowledge of the more experienced. As well as explaining how to care for clematis, it inspires gardeners to recognize the vast range of clematis available today and the many different ways there are to grow them.

Biography
Ruth Gooch has been involved with clematis since childhood when she was captivated by the glorious double-flowered 'Vyvyan Pennell' in her parents' garden. She began Thorncroft Clematis Nursery from the hobby she shared with her parents and, with their help, opened for retail sales in 1989. The nursery has since won multiple gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show. Jonathan Gooch joined Ruth as a full time partner in the nursery in 2000. His many talents have given him a wide range of interests including the nursery's website and designing a method of mailing out mature clematis plants.

This is a 'must have' book for Clematis enthusiasts. It is 10 years since 'An Illustrated History of Clematis' was published. Since then there have been many new cultivars, the majority of which are probably listed for the first time in this book. This book probably contains the most comrehensive list of current cultivars of any recent publication (one or two nursery catalogues excepted!). For those of us that like a book to browse this will be a very useful addition to our library, both for its advice and the up-to-date plant profiles.
