Designed as a companion to A Field Guide to the Mammals of Britain and Europe, this book provides a detailed introduction to the fields of mammalian evolution and behaviour. The book examines evolution and adaptation, how and why mammals survived when dinosaurs became extinct, and how they have become so successful. Using numerous examples, he describes and explains many features of mammal behaviour, including reproduction, feeding, communication and social behaviour. The text is complemented with line drawings by Priscilla Barrett, who also produced the illustrations from the Field Guide. Aimed at both the general and more advanced reader.
