The Nineteenth Annual Conference of the European Cetacean Society was held at L'Espace Encan Conference Centre in La Rochelle, France between 2nd and 7th April 2005. It was attended by 494 persons from 34 countries.

The theme this year was "Marine Mammals and Food: from Organisms to Ecosystems", and speakers invited to give keynote addresses to this theme included: Martin Biuw on "Coping with energetic constraints in a dynamic and unpredictable environment: ontogeny and individual variation in foraging strategies", Andrew Trites on "Marine mammals as indicators of ecosystem change", Ulf Lindstrom on "The role of minke whales in the Barents Sea Ecosystem", and Graham Pierce on "Trophic links as vectors of pathogens and contaminants". In addition to these, there were 54 other talks and 244 posters.

This is the first Conference Proceedings that is presented in CD-ROM format. It departs from previous formats following the decision reached at the Annual General Meeting of the Society held in Sweden in 2004, in that summaries are provided electronically as a book of abstracts, together with about ninety extended contributions in the form of PowerPoint presentations or PDF files.  For the latter, contributions have been arranged alphabetically. For quick reference to the subject matter of each file, the abstract book should be consulted using its index. All abstracts that form the abstract book were subject to a review process and represent all those submissions that were accepted for the conference. No editing of extended summaries has taken place. For the benefit of contributors to future electronic Proceedings, instructions are given at the back of this volume.
