Analysis of the state of environmental degradation, overpopulation, and poverty, and the way in which it is essential that agricultural research is stepped up, in both North and South, to face these problems. Currently progress in managing the world's natural resources in ways which are sustainable is too slow or limited, and the increased knowledge needed, it is argued here, can only come from a global network of agricultural research.
