About this book

Pollen is fascinating material for anyone interested in looking down a microscope, or discovering where their bees have been foraging. The variety of sizes and shapes give clues as to the ingenious ways plants utilise the weather and insect behaviour to deliver pollen to its intended destination. This second edition shares techniques on successful microscopy accompanied by many more illustrations of Norman's pollen drawings and their source.

  • A superb book with both photographs and drawings.
By Pamela 7 Nov 2018 Written for Paperback
This book contains photographs of plants and drawings of the pollen grains of a wide range of plants grown in the UK. There are several pages of details of what pollen grains are, how to collect them and a simple guide to making microscopic preparations of them. The plant photographs are accompanied by Norman's exquisite drawings of the pollen grains; these rival those made by the famous Dorothy Hodges in the 20th century. The drawings are very detailed and are often better than struggling with focussing up and down when looking down the microscope. There are over 200 plants and their pollen illustrated, they include wildflowers, crops, native plants, garden plants and some exotics. Brief notes accompany the illustrations. Even if you don't want to study pollen, this is a beautiful book.
