Biography

Professor Samantha Ward is one of the UK's leading experts in zoo animal welfare and legislation. She serves as the Animal Welfare Expert on the UK Government's (Defra) Zoo Experts Committee, where she helps shape national policy, including the Zoo Licensing Act and the Standards of Modern Zoo Practice of Great Britain. Her influence extends internationally, having contributed to zoo legislation reform in other countries with a focus on improving animal welfare globally.

Samantha is a Professor of Zoo Animal Welfare and Legislation at Nottingham Trent University, where she teaches and mentors students, leads pioneering research, and bridges the gap between academic science and zoo practice. Her work spans from developing innovative welfare assessment tools like the ZooMood app, to advising major zoos and charities on best practice and ethical standards.

With a career that began as an Animal Keeper and evolved into roles such as Conservation and Research Manager, Samantha brings a rare combination of hands-on experience and academic insight. Her research focuses on improving the lives of captive animals through evidence-based management, understanding human-animal interactions, and influencing policy at the highest levels.

Samantha's writing and public engagement have reached global audiences through media, podcasts, and documentaries. Her work is not only shaping the future of zoos but also empowering readers to think critically about animal welfare and the role of zoos in society.
