The Coleoptera are possibly the most studied group of insects. This is not surprising since they are tremendously numerous, extremely diversified in shape, color and size, and relatively easy to collect and mount. In addition they are important to human activity. Some are predators of a great variety of pests, others are important pests of crops and forests. These conditions have led to a huge amount of literature dealing with beetles.
Inspired by the two-volume Litteratura Taxonomica Dipterorum (1758–1930) published in 1997 by Neal L. Evenhuis, Litteratura Coleopterologica (1758–1900) consists of a selected list of books, pamphlets, theses, school programs and dictionaries pertaining to the taxonomy of Coleoptera from the beginning of the Linnaean nomenclature in 1758 to the end of 1900. The emphasis is placed on dates of publication of these works since they can be essential in ascertaining priority of new names or nomenclatural acts. Overall, more than 990 works, published by some 620 primary authors, are listed. For each of them the exact title in full, in addition to the publisher and place of publication, pagination with number of plates, and size, are given. Short biographic notices are included for the primary authors, along with the references consulted.
