About this book

The family Melanopsidae (Gastropoda: Cerithioidea) constitutes ones of the highest diverse groups of non-marine aquatic gastropods in Earth history, ranging from the Cretaceous to the present. Its enormous morphological variability led taxonomists to introduce a plethora of new taxa. Although many of those names are currently not in use, the majority is nomenclaturally available. This inflation of names gave rise to numerous issues of homonymy and objective synonymy, many of which remained unnoticed by later workers. Moreover, there is considerable confusion about the validity and original concept of some of the names used today.

A Nomenclator of Extant and Fossil Taxa of the Melanopsidae (Gastropoda, Cerithioidea) lists all known names associated with the Melanopsidae, recent and fossil, encompassing three family-group names, 79 genus-group names, and 1381 species-group names. Provided are the original combinations and spellings, as well as the original description references for all names. Type genus, type species, type locality, type horizon and type specimens, as well as a discussion of the name's status in nomenclature are indicated as applicable and available.
