By: Ian Thomas and Paul Murfitt
364 pages, b/w illustrations, tables
This book describes the main approaches to environmental management that come from the social sciences, in an Australian context.
Ian Thomas provides an understanding of the systems and processes that are used to guide the more technical elements of environmental management. He uses uncomplicated examples of environmental issues, organisations and policies to give the `big picture' of how to bring about broad environmental improvement through managing what organisations do.
The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 introduces environmental management and discusses the ways in which both the international context and policy issues impact upon modern environmental management. Part 2 describes environmental management processes and systems while Part 3 focusses on how environmental improvements actually occur and the changes needed to introduce these systems. It also outlines some key issues for the future directions of environmental management.
Review of previous edition:Ian Thomas' most recent book Environmental Management: Processes and Practices for Australia is an excellent resource, particularly for secondary and tertiary environmental and environmental law students. The book provides useful and relevant examples when attempting to put various processes and policies into context. Thomas is forthcoming and unbiassed in highlighting and detailing the advantages and disadvantages of technical, legal and policy elements which drive current environmental management processes and practices. ... the book is an excellent resource for current environmental management practices. - ENGANA (Journal of the Victorian Association for Environmental Education), Vol 28 No 3, Dec 2005
