Although Taiwan is a small island, it is an excellent natural classroom for observing and understanding ferns. Not only is it rich in species (the species density is the highest in the world), but the evolutionary divergence is also quite high, covering almost most of the groups. Ferns of Taiwan is published in two volumes and introduces data and pictures of more than 650 species of ferns in Taiwan from basic to advanced. Volume 1 covers 330 fern species. In order to show the diversity of Taiwan's ferns and their evolutionary divergence, the selection of species covers 35 families of ferns and priority is given to the following conditions: all families and genera have as many representative species shown; plants in the same genus can show variability in the morphological changes of the genus; species with different ecological habits, such as aquatic, rock growing, climbing, winding and other growth methods.

The 35 fern families in this book appear in their evolutionary sequence and the identification key is specially designed. The first page of each family focuses on its basic data. Under each family, the genus and group are further distinguished by morphological and ecological characteristics that are easier to observe. With concise and easy-to-understand legends summarising ecological and morphological characteristics, it provides different inroads into identification, which are convenient and fast. It is the easiest introductory book to learn about the world of fern in Taiwan, and it is also the most beneficial reference book for fern observation and identification. The text description of each fern is clear and detailed, including phenotypic characteristics, growth habits and distribution overview.

The pictures of each fern are as far as possible cover ecological photos and close-ups of details, and there are brief illustrations to help readers look at the pictures and identify them. Each fern has a small ecological entry (including ecological zone, topography and growth environment, etc.), as well as two important points when observing ferns – the type and degree of leaf division, and the shape and growth of sporangia or spore membranes. For readers of different levels and needs, diversified query methods are provided in addition to searching by table of contents, or by common and scientific names, a specially designed family and genus-group search table is included to provide readers with the phenotypic characteristics of ferns.

台湾虽是蕞尔小岛，却是观察、了解蕨类的最佳天然教室，不但种类丰富，种密度居世界之冠，而且演化上的歧异性也相当高，几乎涵盖绝大部分的类群。《蕨类观察图鉴1＆2》从基础到进阶，共介绍台湾650多种蕨类的数据与图片，其中本书《蕨类观察图鉴1：基础常见篇》收录330多种较常见以及造形特殊的蕨类，而且为显现台湾蕨类在演化歧异度上的多样性，在种类的挑选上，涵盖了台湾现生35科蕨类，并依下列几个条件优先考虑：各科、属尽量皆有代表种；同一属中的植物能呈现该属形态变化上的变异性；包含各种不同生态习性的种类，如水生、着生、岩生、攀缘、缠绕等生长方式。
