This work includes the 662 medicinal plants of the Balearic Islands that have been referenced in the scientific literature. For each plant, the following information is provided: synonymy and popular names, botanical description, habitat, chemical composition, parts used, pharmacological action, therapeutic use, and the comparison in Ayurvedic, Tibetan, Chinese, Filipino, Moroccan, Mexican and homoeopathic systems. Studies on medicinal flora from the time of the Greek and Latin classics (Hippocrates, Theophrastus, Galen, Dioscorides, Pliny), Arab (Ibn Sina), and Balearic, medieval and modern medicinal flora up to the 21st century have been analyzed from Ramon Llull to Brotat et Terrers, Cursach and Arguimbau, Barceló and Combis, Bianor, Palau and Ferrer, Bonafè and Barceló, etc. The presence of these species in literature and popular culture has also been recorded – the plants of Mallorcan fables and of Ramon Llull have formed two books published separately. The popular lexicon, of great richness, includes 3,626 names and 3,027 sayings in the Catalan language that refer to the 662 medicinal plants studied. The graphic part corresponds to the photographs of the Virtual Herbarium of the Western Mediterranean of the UIB and the collection of watercolours by the artists Irene Mulet and Judit Morales.

En aquesta obra s’inclouen les 662 plantes medicinals de les Illes Balears que han estat referenciades en la literatura científica. De cadascuna d’elles s’analitzen la sinonímia i les denominacions populars, la descripció botànica, l’hàbitat, la composició química, les parts utilitzades, l’acció farmacològica, l’ús terapèutic i la comparació en les farmacopees aiurvèdica, tibetana, xinesa, filipina, marroquina, mexicana i homeopàtica. S’han analitzat els estudis sobre flora medicinal del temps dels clàssics grecs i llatins -Hipòcrates, Teofrast, Galè, Dioscòrides, Plini-, àrabs -Ibn Sina-, i de la flora medicinal balear, medievals i moderns fins al segle xxi -des de Ramon Llull fins a Brotat et Terrers, Cursach i Arguimbau, Barceló i Combis, Bianor, Palau i Ferrer, Bonafè i Barceló, etc. També s’ha recollit la presència d’aquestes espècies en la literatura i cultura popular -les plantes de les rondalles mallorquines i de Ramon Llull han format dos llibres publicats a part. El lèxic popular, de gran riquesa, suma 3.626 noms i 3.027 gloses i refranys en llengua catalana que fan referència a les 662 plantes medicinals estudiades. La part gràfica correspon a les fotografies de l’Herbari Virtual del Mediterrani Occidental de la UIB i la col·lecció d’aquarel·les, a les artistes Irene Mulet i Judit Morales.
