This is a brief history of gardening and the presence of ornamental plants in the botanical literature of Spain. The entry for each species gives the scientific name, family name, common names, synonyms, chorology, occasionally wild accompanying species, flowering period, morphological description, growing conditions, with indications of lighting, irrigation, soil type, etc.., and their use in culture: bedding, hedges, shrubs, isolated clumps of trees etc.

Esta es una breve historia de la jardinería y de la presencia de plantas ornamentales en la bibliografía botánica de España. Mostramos una ficha para cada una con el nombre científico, la familia, los nombres comunes, sinónimos, corología, en ocasiones el hábitat natural, especies que le acompañan, período de floración, descripción morfológica, condiciones de cultivo, con indicaciones sobre iluminación, riego, tipo de suelo, etc., y su utilización en cultivo: planta de temporada, setos, arbustos aislados, grupos de árboles etc. Incluimos, citas de autores españoles y extranjeros, preferentemente horticultores y botánicos franceses e ingleses, de los siglos XVIII y XIX, referentes al cultivo o utilización de estas plantas en los jardines de la época, y citas de autores españoles, desde la época musulmana hasta el siglo XIX, y la historia de las especies en cultivo.
