The aim of the CD-ROM Freshwater Green Algae of the British Isles is to aid the identification of green algae, especially those important in environmental monitoring and other commoner species in the British Isles. It includes an interactive key to about 300 taxa, together with images and general information. The key was produced as a collaborative study between the University of Durham, The Natural History Museum and the Environment Agency of England and Wales.
The CD-ROM contains an interactive key to genera or species based on characters and character states, and information about individual genera and species on pages linked to each taxon. This includes taxonomic description and ecology, line diagram and often also one or two colour images. Further images, which are accessed separately, are added in some cases; these include general views for some of the problem organisms.
