About this book

Language: French

This butterfly guide uses accessible vocabulary, with the few inevitable technical terms (which are part of the baggage of identification) duly explained and immediately accessible. The book proposes visual criteria not subject to individual interpretation: particular attention is paid to the meaning of words, and to the choice of criteria, allowing all observers to have an identical appreciation, an essential prerequisite for correct identification. All the criteria are illustrated: so the observer can see what it is, where it is, and how it should be looked at. For the first time, males and females of nearly 300 species of French butterflies and moths are illustrated, front and back; the book presents nearly 3,000 photos taken in metropolitan France. The variability of individual butterflies, within the same species, is taken into account in the identification keys and widely illustrated. This book results from a collective effort involving more than 100 participants.
