IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria were developed for classifying species at a high risk of global extinction. This publication followed from the formation of the Regional Application Working Group, who sought to develop criteria for using Red List categories at a regional, rather than global, scale. These guidelines deal with a wide variety of natural habitats and taxa, within a variety of political and social contexts.
