Ordering online is the quickest and most secure way to buy from NHBS. All transactional areas of our website are secured using https technology, access to your personal data is password-protected and internet traffic to www.nhbs.com is secured using SSL encryption.
Once you have found an item that you want to buy, click on ‘add to basket’. You will then be given the option to ‘continue shopping’ or to ‘view basket’. Once you are happy that you have added all the items you wish to purchase, click on the ‘view basket’ icon and you will be taken to a page listing all of the items you have chosen to buy.
From the shopping basket you can alter the quantity of each item as well as delete those that you no longer want. If you select ‘save for later’ then this item will be removed to a separate list that is displayed beneath your shopping basket. If you are logged in to your account when you do this, these items will remain in the list so that it is easy to find them at a later date. From the shopping basket page you can also select your shipping country and the method of shipping that you would prefer (standard or express; see more information about delivery methods and pricing here). To proceed with your order, click on the ‘continue to checkout’ button. If you haven’t already done so you may be asked to log in to your account by entering your email address and password. If you have not ordered from NHBS before you will need to create an account by entering your delivery and payment details.
On the following pages you will be given the option to select a shipping and billing address or enter new ones and also to provide payment details. If you are a company or organisation that orders using purchase orders and you already have a credit account with NHBS, then you can select Invoice as the payment type and enter your purchase order reference into the comments box.
How do I change the email address used for my NHBS online shopping account?
If you wish to change the email address associated with your account, please contact us with both your new and old email address details, and we will change it for you.
I have forgotten my password - how do I get a new one?
To request a new password, please visit the following page: www.nhbs.com/site/request-password-reset.
This is an automated service that will send you an email with instructions within a few minutes. If you haven’t received the email, please check your spam folders.
Alternatively, please ensure that there is no white space left at the beginning or end of your email address; it’s best to type your email rather than copying and pasting it.
If, for any reason, you are unable to retrieve your password, please email firstname.lastname@example.org from the email address you have used on nhbs.com before, including your postcode, and we will send you a link which will allow you to set a new password.

We are happy to receive your order by email, post, fax or phone. We are open from Monday to Friday from 8:30am until 5:00pm (UK) and all of our contact details can be found on the Contact Us page.

How do I know if NHBS has received my order?
When you order online from NHBS you will receive an immediate email confirmation which will also contain your sales order number. Please quote this number if you need to contact us regarding your purchase. We will also send an order acknowledgement email as soon as we have processed your order (normally within 1 working day).
If you are ordering by email, post, fax or telephone, we will confirm your order either by email or via the same method that you used to contact us. You can check the status of your order(s) by logging into your online account and clicking on the ‘Recent orders’ option in the ‘My account’ menu. Alternatively, you can contact us at any time and we will provide you with an update.
How long will it take for my order to be processed?
We aim to process all orders on the same day as they are received (or the next working day if received on a weekend or bank holiday). Items that are not in stock will be ordered immediately from the publisher or supplier. All in-stock items on orders received before 12 noon and with express delivery will be dispatched the same day. How do I check the status of my order?
If you would like to find out about the status of your order, please go to My Account. Under ‘recent orders’ you will find details of every order that you have placed with NHBS since 2009. Alternatively, please contact us with your sales order number and we will be happy to provide you with an update.
If you have undispatched orders, we will send you a status update by email once a month. You can request a status update by email at any time.
Methods of payment
We accept payment by the following means:

Cheques and bank drafts in GB Pounds (GB£), Euros (€) or US Dollars (US$).
Bank transfers in GB Pounds (GB£), US Dollars (US$) or Euro (€) to one of our bank accounts. All bank charges are the responsibility of the customer; when making payment by bank transfer, please instruct your bank to cover all charges. Please also notify us separately, stating which bank you have paid the amount into, the amount transferred, the date you made the transfer, the order / invoice / proforma number and your customer name and account number.

Ordering with a Credit or Debit Card
We accept the following credit and debit cards: VISA, VISA Debit, Mastercard and American Express (excluding VISA Electron and PayPal).
When providing your card details we will ask you for the CVV or CSC code of your card. In the case of VISA, VISA Debit, Mastercard, and Switch/Maestro, this code is printed on the back of your card and consists of three digits in or near the signature field. In the case of American Express, the CVV code consists of four digits printed on the front of your card above the card number.
All charges to your card will be made in GB Pounds. If your card is issued by a bank outside the UK, your bank will calculate the exchange rate, and you may be charged a foreign transaction fee. Please contact your card issuer for more information. NHBS will not charge your card until your order is ready for dispatch unless you request otherwise. Please contact Customer Services if your card number or expiry date has changed.
When will my Credit / Debit card be charged?
We will not charge your card until the day your order is ready to be dispatched or part-dispatched to you. Your card will be charged for the GBP Pound value of goods dispatched. If your order is sent in multiple dispatches, we may charge your card separately for each dispatch.
When will my cheque be banked?
We will bank your cheque upon receipt. If you wish to alter or cancel your order after your cheque has been banked, please contact us to arrange a refund.
Do I have to pay VAT and import tax?
The only charge from NHBS is postage and packing which is added onto your order in the basket. For items that have special shipping requirements, any additional charges will be stated clearly on the product page and we will also advise you by email of any changes to shipping costs prior to your order being processed.
When ordering goods for delivery outside of the European Union, you may be subject to import duties and taxes which are levied once the package reaches your country. Any additional charges for customs clearance are the responsibility of the customer. Customs policies vary widely from country to country, so you should contact your local customs office for further information regarding your order with NHBS.
Books and maps are exempt from VAT in the UK. VAT at the standard UK rate of 20% is included in the advertised price of DVDs, CDs, other electronic media and equipment, both on our website and in our marketing emails. (Ex VAT prices are listed in some of our printed catalogues. This information will always be clearly printed).
If you live in any of the EU member states and are registered in your own country for sales tax, you should state your sales tax number when ordering from NHBS. If you do this, we will exclude UK VAT from your bill. Your sales tax number will then be quoted on your invoice, together with our own VAT number (GB 407 4846 44) so you can declare the purchase to your authority. You must tell us at the time you place the order, as we may not be able to refund you later.
If you live in the EU, but are not registered for sales tax, you will pay the advertised price for DVDs, CDs and other electronic media, which includes VAT at the standard UK rate of 20%. If you live outside the EU, we will automatically exclude VAT from your bill for CDs, DVDs, other non-book media and equipment; this will be clearly shown on your order acknowledgement.

Product status and availability information
Some books advertised on nhbs.com are not immediately available from their publishers. If this is the case, they will show one of the status descriptions listed below.
If you have an order for a book which is not immediately available we will not charge or invoice you until it is dispatched from NHBS. We will keep you informed by email about the status of your order, including any changes to the expected date of availability or price. If you would like to amend or cancel your order at any time, please let us know.
In all cases, it is advisable to place an order for a book, even if it is currently not available. The more orders there are for a title that is unavailable, the more encouragement the publisher receives to make the book available. There is no cost to do so, and you may cancel orders without obligation at any time.
In preparation: The title does not yet have a definite publication date. You cannot add this book to your shopping basket as it will not have an advertised price yet; if you wish to pre-order it please contact us. We will dispatch your book as soon as it has been printed and we have been sent stock.
Not yet published: We have an expected date for publication of this book. If the title you are looking at has a price you can add it to your shopping basket and order online. If it doesn't yet have an advertised price and you wish to pre-order it please contact us. We will dispatch your book as soon as it has been printed and we have been sent stock.
Temporarily unavailable: The title is still in print, but there is a short-term problem in the supply chain temporarily preventing our obtaining stock. Although temporarily unavailable, we do expect stock to become available again in the future. If you wish to order or already have an order we will keep trying to get this for you and will dispatch your order as soon as the book becomes available and we have been sent stock.
Reprinting: The title is currently unavailable, but either is being or will be reprinted and we have not been advised of a definite availability date yet. If you wish to order or already have an order we will keep trying to get this for you and will dispatch your order as soon as the book has been reprinted and we have been sent stock.
Reprint under consideration: The title is currently out of print, but its publisher may reprint it; the decision to do so has not yet been made. If you wish to order or already have an order we will keep trying to get this for you and will dispatch your order if the book is reprinted. Backorders placed by booksellers can often persuade the publisher to print a title due to public demand.
The following status messages apply to titles which cannot be supplied and which are displayed for information purposes only:
Out of print: No new copies of the title remain in-print so we cannot supply it.
Cancelled: The title was abandoned by its publisher before reaching print so we cannot supply it.
Why do the prices on your website change from time to time?
All prices listed on our website and in our catalogues are subject to change at any time. Most changes we make to prices result from publishers' or suppliers’ price changes. Other changes may be caused by variations in shipping rates and currency fluctuations.
We will always inform you if there is a change to the price of a title you have ordered from us and you will be able to change or cancel your order at this time. If the price of an item decreases, we will always pass this saving on to you.
When you place a standing order or a continuation order for a book series, we will send each new volume in the series as it is published. We do all the research and will let you know in advance as soon as we know the price and publication date of the next volume in the series. We only bill or invoice you for each volume when it is dispatched to you. If a pre-publication offer exists, you will automatically receive this offer price on the volume.
To place a standing order you will need to have a valid credit card or invoice account and an up to date delivery address. If you have a Library account, all normal benefits you receive will apply to standing orders, including volume discounts and a consolidated dispatch cycle.
Notify standing orders are also available: these ensure that we notify you of new volumes published in series in advance of publication.

Ordering a book which is not on the NHBS website
We can supply you with any book in any language if it is in print. Please provide as much detail about the book as you can give us, and we will do our best to find it for you and send you a quotation. You can then decide if you want to buy the book or not.
What are DVD region codes?
Most DVDs will only play on DVD players in a specific region of the world. All of the DVDs listed on our website will clearly indicate their region code; please ensure before purchasing that you have chosen a DVD that is compatible with your player. We regret that we are unable to accept returns for DVDs if there is a region incompatibility, unless our description on the website is wrong.

If an item is built to order we will clearly indicate this on the item page on www.nhbs.com. Built to order items are not usually available for immediate dispatch, but we will strive to get your order to you as quickly as we can. You will not be able to cancel the order once the goods are in production, and it is not returnable or refundable unless the goods are faulty. The terms and conditions regarding non-returnable items are in accordance with the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000, where your right to cancel does not apply to contracts for goods built to order, and/or are made to a customer’s specification.
